“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” John 3:5-6
In Acts 2:39 Peter says “For the promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God shall call to Himself.”
“And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” (Luke 24:49).
“And it shall be in the last days, God says, that I will pour forth of My Spirit upon all mankind; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams (Acts 2:17).
I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring, And My blessing on your descendants — Isaiah 44
Mark 11:24 “Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they shall be granted you.”
(Acts 9:17 KJV) And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.
(Eph 5:18 KJV) And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
(Eph 3:19 KJV) And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
(Col 1:9 KJV) For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
(Mark 1:8 KJV) I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.
THIS BAPTISM, FILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS FIRSTLY RESERVED ONLY FOR GOD’S CHILDREN, BELIEVERS WHO HAVE ACCEPTED JESUS CHRIST AS THEIR PERSONAL SAVIOR AND FULL LORD OF THEIR LIFE. tHEIR ARE BOTH INITIAL AND CONTINUAL FILLINS, BAPTISMS.
John 14:12 “He that believeth on Me, the works that I do he shall do also, and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father”.
(Mark 16:17 KJV) And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. 19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Lu 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
Mt 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
(John 1:32 KJV) And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. 33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
It is very significant that the description remaining is used to describe the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
(Rom 11:29 KJV) For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.
There are at least four baptisms referred to in the scripture. Each baptism seems to indicate a step of progress in appropriating God’s promises to us in our Christian experience.
Isaiah 32 14 Because the palaces shall be forsaken; the multitude of the city shall be left; the forts and towers shall be for dens for ever, a joy of wild asses, a pasture of flocks; 15 Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.
Latter day outpouring of the Holy Spirit was promised in the Old Testament. Because of sin and disobedience the judgment was allowed to happen to Israel and Judah but there will be a latter day renewal of Israel to God and when that day comes their eyes will be open to their true Messiah. They will then have God’s Holy Spirit poured out among them just as those who have already received Christ on the day of Pentecost and had the Holy Spirit poured out upon them.
The results of this outpouring will not just be a renewing of the spirit, soul and body of believers but it will result in producing natural prosperity in reaping a fruitful harvest. No more will their land be desolate and trodden down by enemies.
Isaiah 59 19 So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him. 20 And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD. 21 As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever.
Notice that the word of God and outpouring of His Spirit comes when people repent and turn to God for cleansing. God has to take away ungodliness and sin in order for us to receive His Holy Spirit.
The Lord fights for those that fear His name and those that turn from transgression. Repentance is a very important part of salvation and must not be ignored. Jesus didn’t come to save us and let us go back into our sins as usual. He came to forgive, deliver and change our lives. His spirit changes our wants. We begin to want different things and desire to be like our Lord.
Ezekiel 39 29 Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.
This prophecy will literally take place when Israel returns to God with all their hearts. There will come a time when they will desire to be filled with the Holy Spirit and God will take all their ungodliness away. They will dwell safely and none shall harm them.
The Holy Spirit is not just for Israel. All who accept Christ as savior and repent of sins can receive God’s Holy Spirit in their lives. This is something provided by Jesus Christ. This is the reason he came down in the flesh. He came to die for the sins of all that would believe and receive Him. He came to give us His spirit so that we do not have to abide alone until He comes a second time. He came to give eternal life to all those who believe.
The promises in the Old Testament is for Gentiles too. When a Gentile accepts Jesus Christ, He becomes part of the adopted Israel or spiritual Israel. In fact until the natural Israel receives Christ, the adopted Israel is more Israel than the natural ones. This should not make us high-minded though. We should be praying for Israel everyday to find out that the Messiah their forefathers rejected is Jesus Christ.
Israel, the natural branches were cut off for a season but they will be grafted in again in the latter days.
We are part of Israel and the promises by faith.
The Holy Spirit is for all that believe. Whether it is Jew or Gentile.
Joel 2 28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: 29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
This is a prophecy of the latter day outpouring of the Holy Spirit. This happened in part on the day of Pentecost recorded in the 2nd chapter of Acts and is being fulfilled continually every time someone receives Christ and is baptized with the Holy Spirit. The latter rain of the Holy Spirit outpouring is in the days before the return of Christ. I believe this has already started the early part of this century.
Zechariah 12: 10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.
This is a day of rejoicing. Israel will find out that the one their forefathers pierced, Jesus Christ, is the true Messiah. This will cause a great mourning and repenting throughout the land of Israel. It will be like the dead coming to life. All Israel will discover their true Messiah and receive the infilling of the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 3 11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
Jesus is the one who baptizes with the Holy Ghost. This is something that we should not make light of. It is a gift of God, a comforter, teacher and precious. He is something serious, necessary and someone to be desired in our very souls. We are not to take it with a grain of salt but desire to walk in the spirit and be filled with the spirit continually until the day Jesus Christ returns.
Luke 11 13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
If we who are not as faithful and loving as the heavenly father, give gifts to our own children, how much more does our heavenly father love us and desire that we have the best, The baptism in the Holy Spirit. He desires that we receive the fullness of His Spirit. He does not want us left alone and without a helper. Jesus went back to heaven and left us the Holy Spirit to be with us forever. This same Spirit is the one who raises from the dead on the day of the resurrection. He is the power who does this. This same power raised up Jesus from the dead. This is the same power that draws a sinner to repentance. This is the power that teaches us that God is real and that He is real in our lives today. This is why the world seeks after an alternative answer to the existence of mankind. They do not have the Holy Spirit. They do not have the witness inside them that God is real so they believe lies. If we reject God, we will open our hearts to believe the lies of evolution. Our eyes will be closed to the truth and we will be deceived. The minute a heart starts to seek after God and desire His presence in their lives, the deception starts to fade away and their eyes start to open to understand and find God. This is because the Holy Spirit is there to guide them to Jesus Christ. God wants all to be saved and receive the Holy Spirit but He will not force it upon any of us. If we continually resist the truth and reject His word, we will open the door to the wicked one to deceive us with the false teaching and lies of this age. Whether it is a false religion, a substitute for the real God or whether it is the humanistic atheistic teaching of evolution without the Holy Spirit to teach us, we will be deceived. If our hearts truly want to find the real God and allow Him to remove sin out of our lives, we will find Him. If we want to remain in our sins and still accept God, we are in danger of receiving a false religion that will let us get by with sin.
Waiting for the Holy Spirit
Luke 24 49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
The Holy Spirit Empowers for service. The apostles were instructed to go to Jerusalem and wait until they were filled with the Holy Spirit before going out to preach the gospel. They were to remain in prayer and an attitude of worship until the day came. God knew that they could not go out on their own. They needed a teacher, a power, and strength to take the place of Jesus who had to leave them. Each one of them as well as us today needed to be baptized with the Holy Spirit.
John 7 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
The special baptism in the Holy Spirit was not given until Jesus Christ left the earth to return to heaven to sit on the right hand of God His father.
John 14 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
He will not leave us comfortless. He will come. He sent the Holy Spirit to take His place. He could only be at one place at a time but the Holy Spirit can dwell separately in each individual who receives Jesus Christ as savior and Lord. The Holy Spirit is to dwell within each one that desires to be filled with the Spirit.
John 16 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
The Holy Spirit is the one that convicts and exposes sin, brings men and women to repentance, corrects, teaches, reproves, comforts, gives wisdom, that gives power for service. Without Him churches would become dead, dry and boring.
First promise of the Holy Spirit
Acts 1 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
A power to witness. This is one of the many offices of the Holy Spirit. Now the word of God that proceeds forth from the mouth of a believer becomes powerful. Now the sinner is convicted of sin and the Holy Spirit is present to draw them to the throne of God. Now the power is present to heal the sick, to save the soul and to accomplish the will of God in the lives of all that will believe.
Acts 2 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
To become a candidate for the Holy Sprit one must repent (change or turn around) of sins. One must then receive Christ as savior from sin. Being baptized is an outward testimony to the world that you have repented and received Christ as a little child. To genuinely repent you must be sorry that you sinned and recognize your need to repent. You must be willing, obedient and humble yourself to God as a child. A child recognizes his or her need for someone to take care of them. A child knows that he or she cannot take care of themselves. They know that they need someone greater and bigger to take care of them. This is the opposite of pride. The pride of men stands in the way of true repentance. Pride says, “I can do it myself.” We cannot. We cannot save ourselves by doing good things. WE need the sacrifice Jesus made. We need to be forgiven of our sins. We need to receive Jesus Christ as savior. We need to be baptized in the Holy Spirit to become a faithful steward for the Lord. WE need God.
Acts 2 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
